I love this post because it makes me feel like I’m not the only one who struggles with staying focused. I tried many brain boosting drinks but There are SO many things that pull our attention away from what we’re doing. If you don’t believe me, try this little exercise: Set a timer for one minute and write the following sentence on a piece of paper: “I am working on a project that is due on Tuesday.” Unfold the paper and set the timer for another minute. Write down the first thing that comes to your mind when you look at the paper. Chances are, what you were working on has been pushed out of your consciousness. This happens to everyone. What I want to share with you in this newsletter is a list of ten superfoods that, according to a scientific study published in the Journal of Neurology, can significantly boost brain function. These foods have been shown to improve concentration, memory and mental agility. They’re inexpensive, easy to find and easy to incorporate into your diet. Try including some of these superfoods in your next meal or drink and see if they don’t make it more likely that you’ll be able to complete that big task on your desk, finish that report you’re writing for work, or remember that important phone number you need to dial.

Green Tea – The antioxidants in green tea have been shown to increase concentration and mental alertness.

Dark Hot Chocolate – One bar (100 grams) of dark chocolate contains between 50 and 60 mg of the chemical flavanol which has been shown to improve blood flow to the brain and enhance memory.

Smoothie w/ Flaxseed – Consuming 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) of ground flaxseed per day may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by as much as 30 percent.

Oatmeal – Eating oatmeal (cooked, not instant) can actually increase your short-term memory.

Red Wine – Drinking one or two glasses of red wine every day may protect your brain against Alzheimer’s. It appears that the alcohol has a similar effect on the brain as it does on the liver.

Spinach Smoothie – A diet rich in spinach (at least 4 cups per week) has been shown to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by 50 percent.

Sunflower Seeds – One tablespoon of sunflower seeds contains more omega-3 fatty acids than an egg yolk. Omega-3s are vital for brain function.

Walnuts – One ounce (about 28 walnuts) contains more omega-3s than an egg yolk. Plus, eating a handful of walnuts (or other nuts) just before going to sleep can improve your memory and concentration the next day.

Yogurt – A 16-ounce container of non-fat plain yogurt contains only 86 calories but it has more probiotics (healthy bacteria) than any other food. Probiotics help maintain healthy intestinal flora which is essential for good health. I’ve put together a free online teleseminar where I’ll reveal my top ten brain boosting foods. If you’re interested, just send me an email (at bhuttia@thegaryhalbertletter.com) with the words “Brain Boosting Teleseminar” in the Subject Line. I’ll then send you detailed information about the seminar including the date and time, the phone number to call, and the name and number of everyone who will be attending. Oh, and bring your own snacks. It will be a casual, no-pressure event. Peace.
